Peter Derek Van Denburg - Biography

I was born in Dayton Ohio in 1943. After the war, my family moved to South Onondaga, outside of Syracuse NY where my father and grandfather ran a truck dealership. After my father died in 1953 the family moved to Schenectady area where I grew up and, while in high school, met Cheryl, who I would marry 20 years later. I attended Syracuse University and graduated with an electronics degree. I took a job with Eastman Kodak and worked there for 32 years, earning two post-graduate degrees and advancing to middle management in the Government Systems Division (eventually sold to ITT). Most of my career was spent serving government contracts. My concentration was computer systems design and software supporting project like Lunar Orbiter Probe (pre Apollo), Apollo Lunar Surface Camera, Hubble, and Chandra. I moved to Canandaigua in the late 1960's. I retired from Kodak in 1997 and took a position as director of the Downtown Canandaigua Business Management Association (BID) which I held for four years. In 2002 I transitioned to a position in security management as well as forming two new businesses: Hickory Dickory Doc (see hicdicdoc.com) and Canandaigua Can (c ommunity relations for not-for-profits; see canandaiguacan.com). I am co-owner of the Cuddeback Antique Center. I was chairperson for the Canandaigua Community Events Committee (Canandaigua-Events.org) for eleven years and helped form the Canandaigua community watch initiative (canandaiguacan.com/neighborscare). I am on the city's Board of Assessment Review and a long standing member of Channel Twelve's public access television board of directors. I was a six year member of the YMCA board and am an active Rotary member having served on its board of directors. I am part of the team that operates the annual Canandaigua Classic antique show benfitting Granger Homestead. I am chair of the annual Father's Day Car Show benefitting Sonnenberg Gardens. I am president, webmaster and membership chair for the Finger Lakes Section of the Mercedes Benz Club of America which held its spring 2008 board of directors meeting in Canandaigua. My best friends areTulip my Lhasa Apso, and Poppy, my Yorkie. Tulip is a certified Therapy Dog (Therapy Dogs International) and we enjoy helping area people smile more and feel much better! Our visits include the ARC Eberhardt Center and the Webster Comfort Care Home. For our efforts we received the 2008 United Way Volunteer of the Year award. I manage PAWSitively, which promotes pet therapy in our area. Poppy is still a puppy but will follow Tulip's footsteps, being trained by K-9 Healers. I have a long history of involvement with wildlife and regularly support the Wild Wings raptor center as the result of a heartrending encounter with a Red Tailed Hawk named Henry. Recently I have become deeply involved with Bridges for Brain Injury and their Wildlfe Defenders program and helped to create their new Close Encounters program at The MM Ewing Continuing Care Center. In my spare time I enjoy the beauty and serenity of Canandaigua Lake on our 23-foot Starcraft, with my wife and long time supporter Cheryl, who is a well know area antique dealer and accomplished artist.
